Marine Antique- Deck Compass and Binnacle

The Deck Compass is normally located on the monkey island inside a binnacle. The Deck Compass is fitted with a Liquid Bowl Magnetic Compass. The Compass Bowl is slung in the upper part of the binnacle. This is a cylindrical container made of a teak wood/aluminium/ fibreglass and brass fittings. No magnetic material is used in it's construction. A small door in the mid-section allows access to an electric bulb / or an oil lamp to illuminate the card from below through a slot. A periscope tube arrangement consisting of lenses and a mirror is fitted at the bottom of the binnacle to view the compass card, i.e. to view the compass reading inside the wheelhouse at the steering position.
